Multi-Photon Processes and High-Order Harmonic Generation

The Optical Physics Lab is currently involved in theoretical QED research on High Order Harmonic Generation (HG) at Above Threshold Ionization (ATI). Such Harmonic Generation is significant not only as a table-top source of coherent XUV and soft x-ray radiation, but it also offers a window into the interaction between an atom and a strong optical field. Previous semi-classical analyses have proven ineffective in explaining certain characteristics of the higher harmonics and previous numerical calculations do not offer much insight into the physical phenomena. Our group has proposed an alternative framework which treats the radiation as transitions between stationary Volkov states. This formulation has been able to reproduce all of the key experimental results and at the same times offers contrast to the semi-classical view.
